The Green Homes Grant was introduced at the end of the first Coronavirus lockdown as a way of stimulating the economy and at the same time improving the energy efficiency of properties. Property owners, including landlords, could get two thirds of the cost covered up to a maximum of £5,000. This meant a landlord could have £7.500 worth of work done for just £2,500. With MEES already squeezing the efficiency of properties and the rating due to be increased in coming years, this was a great offer for landlords. It is still the target that all homes should be carbon neutral by 2030.

In November 2020, the government announced they would extend the grant process until 31 March 2022. The scheme opened in September 2020, which enabled landlords or homeowners to apply for a grant. Homeowners on income-based or disability benefits may be entitled to vouchers covering the full cost of improvement, up to a value of £10,000.

Energy efficiency improvements would range from cavity wall or roof insulation to upgrading single glazed windows and doors to double or triple glazed.

On the 29 March the government confirmed the green homes grant will be closing on 31 March 2021 from 5pm. Any applications made before this cut off will be honoured.
