We are sure you all agree the Ukrainians are facing great difficulties and horrendous situations, and would like to be able to help them. There is a lot of uncertainty as to how this will affect private landlords and tenants who would like to become a sponsor.
We can confirm, anyone who is successful in becoming a sponsor must be able to have Ukrainian refugees stay at the property for a minimum term of six months. For this a payment will be made to the sponsor of £350. This is a tax free payment.
A Ukrainian refugee can reside in the UK for a maximum period of three years and can either work in this time or receive universal credit.
On 25 March at 12.00 we are hosting a free webinar for all our members to hopefully be able to give further guidance for landlords on how either a landlord or tenant becoming a sponsor could affect any tenancy in place.
Whilst we are awaiting for further guidance, during our webinar we will be looking at covering the following:
- What is the Homes for Ukraine scheme
- Which homes are needed
- Any legal problems for landlords
- Will the property become an HMO (House of Multiple Occupancy) by permitting a Ukrainian refugee to stay?
- Any insurance issues
- Landlords’ obligations
