The Department for Levelling Up Housing and Communities (DLUHC) released a Press Release on 23 October stating that a one off winter payment of £65 million as a support package for vulnerable renters will be available.

What this means is the government will issue each local authority a certain amount of funding that supports low income earners in arrears or tenants who have become homeless during the coronavirus pandemic. The period the rent arrears will be considered must be accrued during the pandemic. Any rent arrears before the pandemic will not be considered.

If the local authority agrees to make a payment on behalf of a tenant it is most likely to be paid directly to the current landlord, or a new landlord if the funds are to support the tenant moving into a new property.
