Right to rent update in England

Up to and including the 6 April 2022 any applicant or current tenant that has a Biometric Residence Card (BRC), Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or a Frontier Worker Permit (FWP) will no longer be able to produce their actual documents to landlords or agents. A right to rent check will then only be completed via the Home Office with their share code and date of birth. Just like tenants that are part of the EU settlement scheme.

Where you have a tenant with a BRC, BRP or FWP and you checked their right to rent through looking at the physical documents, when you next need to check their right to rent, you will have to do it via the online service and not using the physical documents. This may be when they move property, or because their existing time limited right to rent has expired, either at the end of 12 months or the length of their right to reside in the UK, whichever is the longer.
