There is a consultation launched about the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Regulations 2015 that can be found here. You can complete the online survey here, or you can email smokeandcarbonreview@communities.gsi.gov.uk. Emailing has the advantage you can make wider comments than the online survey allows.

These regulations have always been “troublesome”, specifically in their requirement for testing the day the tenant takes the property (we would recommend within the 14 days leading up to the commencement day). Another troublesome area is where a flat in a block is connected to the communal alarm system, which is tested weekly anyway, and the flat owner/agent does not have access to test the main alarm. Again if the test had to be within the previous 14 days this would be covered.

Whilst the consultation states that respondents should not expect any changes as they are asking about the effectiveness it is too good an opportunity to miss to express views on the current rules. Rules that are sensible are more likely to be followed and therefore more likely to be effective.
